NABH is the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers. It is also the constitution board of the Quality Council of India (QCI), which was set up to establish and operate an accreditation program for Hospitals and healthcare organizations. NABH was formed in 2005 and is the principal accreditation body for healthcare in India. The first edition of the NABH standard was released in 2006, and the standard has been revised every three years.

The first hospital accredited by NABH was BM Birla Heart Research Centre in Kolkata, West Bengal, in 2006. The First Public Hospital, Gandhinagar General Hospital, received the NABH accreditation in 2009. After the NABH 5th edition, the organization has to undergo Surveillance every two years. If the Hospital is NABH entry level, after two years, the hospital can apply for a renewal certificate.

Standard:

NABH standard is a statement of expectation that defines the structure and process that are substantially in place in an organization to enhance the quality of care and patient safety.

Objective Elements:

NABH standard, which can be measured objectively on a rating scale. The acceptable compliance with objective elements determines the overall compliance with a standard. Objective elements are scored during assessment for compliance. During scoring, desirable aspects are not considered.

Scoring System for NABH 6th Edition

NABH 6th edition objective elements started in the standard are scored during the hospital assessment. Scoring is to be done using a five-point scale.

  • The overall compliance rate is 80% for the objective element ‘Commitment level.
  • The overall compliance rate is 80% for the objective elements ‘achievement level.

  • The score for every core objective element must not be less than 4.
  • The hospital's overall compliance rate is at least 80% for the objective elements of commitment level.
  • There is no individual standard should have more than one objective element score of 2 or less in the assessment.
  • The average score for the individual standard must not be less than 4.
  • The average score for the chapter must not be less than 4.
  • Every objective element with score of 3 or below should be accepted action plan
